A mainly Development Squad side, but with a taste of first team seniors, beat Colchester United today three nil in a training ground friendly.

Youngster Jack Payne continued his rise and improvement by bagging himself his 12th goal in 12 Development level games, and Lee Barnard and Bedsente Gomis completed the scoring for Southend.

Freddy Eastwood and Conor Clifford also got minutes under their belt’s in the match.

Graham Coughlan told the Official Site following the run out.

‘The lads all worked hard and it was a very good performance from them. We finished the game with five under 16’s and six under 18 players on the pitch and they saw the game out well.’

Coughlan goes on to say that he feels the goal will have been a welcome confidence boost for striker Lee Barnard and no doubt his time on the pitch will have massively helped with his fitness and sharpness and he looked good out there, so he’s done his first team chances no harm at all as we head into a busy end of season schedule.

Feared Barnard wasn’t going to be the same as before and this loan wouldn’t work out and so far don’t think it is. Think Payne must be very close to a proper first team airing.
