Southend were beaten 1-0 by Rushden and Diamonds following a Greg Pearson goal.

Despite heroics from Southend keeper Darryl Flahavan, who made a series of great saves to keep Southend in the tie, he could do nothing about a deflected shot from Pearson.

Wayne Gray missed a great second half chance and Freddy Eastwood failed to convert an injury time header to draw the game level.

18 year old James Lawson came on as sub right at the death and nearly sneaked the ball into the far corner.

Steve Tilson came out with the managers usual mantra that we can now ‘concentrate on the league’

Adding:

‘If you don’t put your chances away, then it doesn’t matter who you are playing, you do not deserve to win the game. It’s been a good competition for us and it’s obviously disappointing to lose but now we’ll just have to concentrate on the league. We are disappointed to lose but we worked very hard following our defeat at the weekend. If you have to go out of the competition, then maybe it’s better that you go out in this round so we can concentrate on the league.’
