An Ideal Result

When Chesterfield and Rochdale met on Tuesday night the best result for Southend would’ve probably been a draw? That’s exactly what happened at Chesterfield, who might have jumped above us again on goal difference but nothing more.

Rochdale winning would’ve seen them extend a point’s gap over us with Chesterfield recovering quickly from the three-nil beating of them we dished out at Roots Hall on Saturday.

Going into the final minute though Chesterfield looked certain to win as they were two-nil up but a handball, red card and successfully converted penalty later Rochdale were back in the game and in injury-time they scored again to see the game end in an unlikely two-two draw.

Rochdale might have extended their lead over us by an extra point but they’ve also played a game more than us now with Chesterfield level on games played with us, we’ve both played twenty-six now and each have 45 points to Rochdale’s 47.

When all’s said and done we’ve got to worry about what we do, but it doesn’t hurt to look out for the results of other clubs and the ideal result from that promotion game was a draw, and now it’s down to us to make sure we can make the most of this.
