Shut That Window

Daniel Bentley’s reputation is growing all the time but I don’t think that it’s growing quite enough just yet for Southend to be too worried about him being plucked away from Roots Hall before the end of the January transfer window.

In his interview with the Echo though Phil Brown says that he can’t wait for the month to end as it’ll mean that we’ve managed to keep hold of him as he’s worried this could happen? He’s hoping we can manage this until the end of the season at least.

‘When you have a goalkeeper playing like we do you can’t wait for the transfer window to close to be honest.

‘There was just no way he was going to beaten but hopefully we can keep him here until the end of the season and he can have something on his CV he can always look back and be proud of.

‘Daniel has the ability to go all the way in the game but I just hope that’s with me and nobody else.’

The thing that works in our favour, for all they’re worth these days, is that Bentley only signed a three-year contract last summer.

Bentley really is a great talent though isn’t he and if he continues to develop as he is then I’d not bet against Brown’s previous feeling that he could one day even be good enough to play for England.

Contract would certainly push the fee up, but he’s having an outstanding season so far, especially for his first proper one. Has to be attracting attention, but his age, still lots of development to do, for the next season or two the bigger boys may want to see consistency from him before they get tempted.

So young for a goalkeeper isn’t he. It would be easy for a big boy to snap him up based on potential only for it to be wasted. He’s best off staying with us for the duration of his contract, at least, I’d say. Then again I’m biased.
