The conditions at Mansfield on Saturday were terrible and this didn’t make it easy for football to be played but both sides had to play in this so they can’t be blamed for Southend’s two-one defeat.

John White has said in his interview with the Echo that blaming the conditions would be the easy route out as a reason for the surprise defeat against Mansfield so he wasn’t going to do that, as he knows we should’ve done better regardless as the home side managed to.

‘The conditions were far from ideal and it did make it hard but it was the same for both teams so we’re not going to use that as an excuse for this defeat.

‘We did struggle in the first half and found it hard to get out of our half at times.

‘All round it was just a very frustrating and disappointing day because we should have been to come here and do a job.’

White’s own performance was also below par, and he wasn’t hiding from that either but he wasn’t able to explain the reasons for it. It must have just been one of those days? What we’ve now got to do is put it behind us and simply move on.

After the training break in Portugal we’ve got two games at Roots Hall in a row, against Exeter and Hartlepool, with the skipper looking for us to respond well in both.

‘We have two big home games coming up now and we need to get back to winning ways in them and get ourselves up the table again.’
