That winning habit is something that Southend kept going as we won once again. An early Shaquille Coulthirst goal was enough to give us a one-nil win over Shrewsbury Town at Roots Hall on Saturday.

A game that had barely got underway saw us get off to a great start as John White’s fine cross from the right wing finding Coulthirst with his equally as good header nestling in the bottom corner with just two minutes played.

Shrewsbury almost drew level but Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro shot hit the post.

Coulthirst might have had a hat trick, and a hat trick of headers, as a further two were on target but Shrewsbury goalkeeper Jayson Leutwiler saved both of them.

James Collins also shot just wide of Daniel Bentley’s goal, with our goalkeeper beaten.

Yet another header could have brought us another goal, to give us he breathing space that we would’ve wanted, but Barry Corr’s header was disappointing and straight at a more than grateful Leutwiler.

The game ended with Shrewsbury going down to ten men when substitute Andy Mangan was sent off with five minutes to play as he picked up a second yellow card following a poor challenge on Bentley.

We utilising this advantage to see out the final five minutes to win once again.
