While many eyes were focused on the closure of the transfer window Southend were taking on Newport County at Roots Hall on Friday. The points were shared in a nil-nil draw but Newport quite literally paid the penalty as they missed one.

There wasn’t much to report from the game, like the transfer window actually and it’s usually over inflated deadline day hype, in all honesty but Newport goalkeeper Lenny Pidgeley did save a Will Atkinson header in the first half.

Pidgeley, once a youngster with Chelsea, also saved from Barry Corr and denied Lee Barnard his first goal since his return to the club.

Newport started the second half stronger though and this dominance brought a chance to open the scoring.

Mark Phillips brought down Ryan Burge and it was left to Robbie Willmott to take the penalty, we would have been confident with Dan Bentley in goal but the goalkeeper wasn’t needed as Willmott didn’t hit the target. His penalty was ‘ballooned’ high and wide.

Goals from range are becoming a speciality of ours lately, but Michael Timlin couldn’t add another to our collection with his effort just wide.

The last say went to Newport though with Willmott almost making up for his penalty miss, Bentley was called into action this time and he saved at the end of the game to make sure it ended in a draw.

Our unbeaten run remains in tact but we’re starting to draw too many games really.

That said we’re still very much in the League 2 promotion hunt though, and not just the play off hunt the automatic promotion hunt too, and we could have lost this game after all if the penalty had gone in so it wasn’t all bad.
