The Preview: Southend v Portsmouth

Southend are looking to end a run of games without a win as Portsmouth, many people’s bet to be pushing for promotion out of League 2 with us, come to Roots Hall on Saturday.

Portsmouth themselves are on a run of two successive League 2 defeats but had the boost of a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy win over League 1 side Yeovil Town sandwiched between these defeats, with us losing our own Johnstone’s Paint Trophy game against AFC Wimbledon on penalties.

Injury means that Ben Coker isn’t going to play again this calendar year so Phil Brown had to move into the emergency loan window to borrow Jerome Binnom-Williams from Crystal Palace and he should make his debut. Phil Brown doesn’t have too many other major concerns though.

Skipper Ben Chorley and Nigel Atangana are injured so they’ll not be travelling with Portsmouth but they’ll have the experienced Joe Devera to call upon as he’s recovered from injury.

We’ve had a good record at Roots Hall against Portsmouth, including a battling win last season when we came from a goal down to win two-one, so we should be confident enough going into this game. What we’d give for something similar on Saturday.
