Southend’s hopes of bringing in Jack Grimmer have been ended by injury but Phil Brown has admitted former loanee Luke O’Neill could still be an option, along with another former loanee from Nottingham Forest Stephen McLaughlin.

Injury to Shrimpers target, and Fulham defender, Grimmer has ended those chances with Brown looking to Burnley’s O’Neill once again?

The Southend boss has told the Echo a loan deal had been agreed with the Championship side for the full back but with him stretchered off against Wycombe he’s been left disappointed, probably not as much as the player himself mind!

Brown said.

‘It was really disappointing to learn of Jack’s injury. We had been in talks with Fulham to bring Jack to the football club on loan but it does now seem that we are going to have to look elsewhere which is frustrating.

‘I`m keen to get competition for places all over the pitch but, if I’m being honest, we don’t really have that in defence right now.

‘Jack would’ve been ideal because he can play all across the back four so I’m disappointed that he got injured.’

He added that some of the U21 prospects at the Blues could be brought in however he questions if they’ll be ready for the League 1 step up at this stage? With that in mind we will ‘definitely need to bring someone else in.’

That someone could be our loanee from last year O’Neill? We’re keen on him with contract talks also ongoing with Adam Thompson, who is still recovering from a shoulder injury from last season.

‘We are still interested in Luke O’Neill but that’s an ongoing situation and so are the contract talks with Adam Thompson.’

In that same report the Echo also said that they understood McLaughlin remains someone that Brown wants back at Roots Hall too.
