Former Grays player Gary Hooper is set to start in tonight’s clash with Bournemouth in the Carling Cup. Hooper left Grays by mutual consent and signed a years contract with the Blues.

It will be interesting to see if Southend can get through to the second round, having failed in the past eight seasons. The last time Southend managed to get through was back in 1998 when they won against Gillingham. This setup a two legged second round clash with Coventry where Southend lost 5-0.

Spencer Prior will be out of action tonight having sprained his ankle against Sunderland on Saturday which means that Peter Clarke is set to take his place.

To put it in a few words “you lot kicked our ass”. Southend’s first win in the Carling cup in 8 long years, nice one. Good luck in round 2!
