Southend have a slender advantage after the first leg of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Southern Final after they stunned League One Leyton Orient on Tuesday night.

Paul Smith had to pull off a series of saves in the first half to keep Orient at bay, with the sides going into the break level.

Approaching the hour Southend broke the deadlock with Ryan Leonard (57), via the aid of a deflection, scoring. Minutes later it was almost two-nil, but the post denied The Shrimpers.

Michael Timlin’s serious injury was a blow to Southend, but the added time this brought saw the League One side push for an equaliser at The Matchroom Stadium. Again Smith was able to prevent this, with the help of the bar too so Southend take a 1-0 lead into the second leg.
