A well fought battle by Southend saw them remain at the top of Division 1, with a 2-0 win over Yeovil.

Yeovil started the stronger team with some last minute defending in the Blues box, with Darryl Flahavan pulling off a smart save from Arron Davies. Southend only had a few chances of their own in the first half, with Eastwood coming close.

Bentley broke the deadlock on 36 minutes, when Eastwood headed Bentley free from his defender in the area, and a simple shot at the near post saw Southend go one up.

Southend nearly went two up late on in the first half when Mark Gower drove a shot on goal, with keeper Collis managing to scramble the ball around the post.

Into the second half, Mark bentley was put through again by Luke Guttridge, with the Yeovil defence only managing to get the ball to Freddy Eastwood whose shot went wide.

Gower was denied an obvious penalty when he was tripped in the Yeovil box, but the second goal came when Gower’s corner met the head of Adam Barrett only to be saved by Collis, but Goater had the job of tapping the ball home from close range.

Adam Barrett who was sent off with five minutes remaining for a second bookable offence, will miss the home game against Rotherham this Friday with a one match ban.

The Shrimpers are now twelve matches unbeaten, with Colchester close up in second place winning their match at the weekend also.
