Southend’s problems with the law might have gone away, however Michael Timlin has had problems of his own and as a result will spend 84-days behind bars!

The midfielder, who is out of contract this summer but expected to remain with the club, has been sentenced to jail time having been found guilty of attempting to pervert the course of justice relating to false details he gave in an attempt to avoid a speeding fine.

An “out of character” mistake is what the club believe the 28-year-old made and they, as an official statement revealed, plan to stick by him: ‘Southend United Football Club have today been made aware that Michael Timlin has received a custodial sentence for a period of 84 days in relation to traffic offences.

‘The club have always found Michael to be a most professional and honourable person and believe the error of judgement leading to his imprisonment totally out of character.

‘At the time of this statement the club does not have the full details but it will be our intention to stand by Michael to help and support him in anyway possible.

‘The club will provide a further update when more information is available.’
