Without wanting to tempt fate too much I think we can say that Southend are back to form as a third League 2 win was secured on Saturday when we beat York City three-two at Bootham Crescent.

A chance to take the lead inside ten minutes came our way when Jack Payne was brought down in the penalty area. Myles Weston is the man charged with spot kick duties these days and he made no mistake as he beat Michael Ingham.

Three minutes into first half injury time Russell Penn headed past Daniel Bentley to bring York level, when it looked highly likely that we we’re going in ahead.

Damage of letting a lead slip wasn’t felt too much with Kevan Hurst quickly putting us ahead again after the break as he capitalised on an Ingham mistake when he spilled a Payne cross to stoke home unchallenged.

Payne, having played a part in both Southend goals so far, got the one that he probably deserved finishing off a David Worrall cross with twelve minutes to go to secure the points.

Winfield’s far-post header from Marvin McCoy’s delivery seven minutes later counted for nothing.

Dave Winfield scored with five minutes to play to give York hope but his header from Marvin McCoy’s cross was nothing more than a late consolation in the end with us claiming another deserved win to get out promotion push firmly back on track.
