It’s not a game that’ll live long in the memory but Southend’s first win in five League 2 games was the most important thing with Barry Corr’s goal effectively seeing us to victory over Portsmouth on Saturday, an injury time second wrapped up a two-nil win at Roots Hall.

Chances were few and far between in the first half with Crystal Palace loanee Jerome Binnom-Williams impressing on his debut, denied a debut goal when Portsmouth goalkeeper Paul Jones saved his header from a Kevan Hurst corner.

Portsmouth’s best chance came at the start of the second half with Miles Storey’s powerful strike was saved by Daniel Bentley, or did it hit him? Corr was soon on hand to give us the lead when he couldn’t miss as another Hurst corner rebounded into his path.

A little pressure had to be withstood with a Portsmouth effort cleared off the line but the points were wrapped up by Shaquile Coulthirst’s breakaway second goal, the first of his spell from Tottenham Hotspur, at the death.
