Southend all but secured a League 2 play off place on Monday with a one-nil win over Accrington Stanley at Roots Hall thanks for Barry Corr’s goal.

There wasn’t much to write home about from the first half as Accrington, still with minor concerns about relegation, making us work hard.

Ryan Leonard came closest to making the breakthrough but his header from a John White cross from the right ended up going just wide of the post.

Our goal came on 64 minutes to pretty much secure our play off place.

Set up by Will Atkinson an 11th goal of the season was scored by Corr when he took his time to fire home an effort from inside the box into the bottom corner.

Daniel Bentley didn’t have much to do but he did have to produce a save to prevent Shay McCartan from bringing Accrington, who barely threatened, level. Bentley producing another fine saw to tip his volley wide.

Now that we’re six points clear of eight place Oxford, the only side capable of catching up, we should be safe in our position with only two games to play. Not only would we need to lose both and Oxford win both we’d need a 10 goal better difference to occur.

It’s not quite celebration time but it’s not far off it, even when a play off place is secured though we can’t celebrate unless we secure promotion.
