Southend were within minutes of securing yet another win and inflicting a first Greenhous Meadow defeat in League 2 upon Shrewsbury Town but in the end we had to be content with a one-one draw.

An uncharacteristic mistake by Daniel Bentley was behind the late equaliser, however it was thanks to our goalkeeper that we perhaps came away with a point.

Shrewsbury could’ve been ahead as early as the second minute when Mickey Demetriou’s cross found Bobby Grant but from a position he would’ve ben expected to score from he put his effort wide but our reaction was swift with Jayson Leutwiler forced into a save from Joe Pigott’s header with Adam Thompson also kept out by Leutwiler.

The impressive away form that we’ve shown this season looked like it could bring us another win on the road when a quickly taken Michael Timlin freekick saw Jack Payne show good skill to work and opening that he smashed into the top corner early in the second half.

Bentley pulled off a good save to keep out a Connor Goldson header and preserve our lead, which we looked like we could see through until late on when Bentley dropped the ball with debutant substitute Tyrone Barnett quickly reacting too turn the ball into the top corner.

It’s a good point, it could’ve been more but we would’ve taken the point before the game.
