A response to last weekends (outside) automatic promotion chances ending defeat was needed by Southend and we well and truly got this at Rochdale when we won three-nil at Spotland.

Things might have been difference had Rochdale not missed an early chance through Joe Bunney though.

Given his first start by Phil Brown this opportunity was taken by Jacob Murphy when he made the most of Matt Done’s mistake to get a cross in for Barry Corr who put us ahead on 12 minutes.

Scott Hogan and Bunney got in each other’s way when left with just Daniel Bentley to beat.

A second before half time came our way when Ryan Leonard provided the cross for Murphy to then score a goal of his own, his first since arriving on loan from Norwich, just before half time.

The points were wrapped up seconds into the second half when Michael Timlin volleyed home number three. Timlin finished off Kevan Hurst’s left wing cross to strengthen our play off chances.

It would’ve been four if Hurst’s hadn’t been unfortunate when trying his luck from range.

Hurst’s effort hit the crossbar with Jack O’Connell’s header disallowed for offside to prevent Rochdale getting a consolation goal.

We’ve still got work to do to make sure we finish in the top seven but this helps consolidate our play off place.
