Southend, reduced to ten men early on against Plymouth Argyle on Saturday, suffered defeat against with a two-nil defeat at Home Park.

Things started well for us and we almost took an early lead but Barry Corr saw his header from Myles Weston’s cross cleared off the line by Kelvin Mellor, we were soon down to ten men though.

Cian Bolger, booked early in the game for a foul on Marcus Morgan picked up his second on fifteen minutes and that led to him going off early and us seeing out much of the game a man light. Plymouth almost took a half time lead by Carl McHugh’s freekick was headed wide by Rueben Reid.

The breakthrough finally came a few minutes into the second half when Lewis Alessandra got onto the end of Mellor’s cutback, he’d earlier saved them a goal and now he was creating one, to fire past Daniel Bentley.

Mellor and Alessandra were involved in the second at the midway point as Reid made no mistake with a header this time with Bentley once again likely to have impressed the scouts watching on with a wonderful save to turn McHugh’s header wide but the damage was already done.
