Southend have now got to recover from the gut wrenching three one defeat against Morecambe at The Globe Arena on Saturday, which means we miss out on automatic promotion, to come again in the play offs.

We knew that our fate was in our own hands but with both Bury and Wycombe Wanderers winning, with Bury taking the third and final automatic promotion place behind Burton Albion and Shrewsbury Town, we missed out and need to take the play off route again.

It wasn’t the start that we wanted, or needed really, when Jamie Devitt and Aaron Wildig combined to leave Jack Redshaw with a chance that he took convincingly to give Morecambe an early lead. It wasn’t the truest strike that Jack Payne will ever manage but, as we needed to, he scored shortly after to make it one one from a David Worrall cross.

Redshaw again went close to putting Morecambe ahead again before half time but he curled just over but after we’d started the second half well when Daniel Bentley and, recently crowned April Player of the Month, Adam Barrett allowed Wildig in he made no mistake from a tight angle to put Morecambe ahead again.

Andreas Arestidou made a fine save to deny Payne a second goal, and a second equaliser, and just moments after Kevan Hurst’s effort, destined for the back of the net, was cleared off the line by Laurence Wilson Morecambe scored again! Redshaw put in Jamie Devitt and he beat Bentley.

Further Arestidou saves to deny Joe Pigott and Barry Corr meant we ended the season in defeat but we’ve got to dust ourselves down and look to somehow put the disappointment of all the hard work we’d done to leave promotion in our own hands only to lose it behind us and come again in the play offs.

This will be tough but with last seasons disappointment to banish too I’m optimistic we’ll still go up. At least I hope so!
