Southend left it very late on Saturday but the one nil win at Exeter City kept our chances of finishing in the top three alive but this loss for Exeter ended their own play off hopes at St James Park. We’ll go level on points with third placed Wycombe Wanderers if we win at Bury on Tuesday.

Liam Sercombe had chances for Exeter that he couldn’t take with Jimmy Keohane also failing to take a chance for the home side with Joe Pigott unable to apply enough power, or direction, to an effort to threaten Exeter goalkeeper Christy Pym’s goal with veteran defender Adam Barrett heading wide in a nil nil first half that didn’t require either goalkeeper to save.

This changed in the second half when Tom Nichols was denied by Daniel Bentley with Myles Weston denied a winner for us by Pym.

A draw, which would’ve ended Exeter’s play off hopes anyway and ended our automatic promotion hopes, looked likely as we moved into injury time but Michael Timlin was the hero as he forced the winner at the death.

What a climax we could have to the season? It’s all set up perfectly for the game at the DW Stadium on Tuesday with Bury knowing they’ll move into third with a win but we’ll know if we win only goal difference keeps us behind Wycombe after they drew on Saturday, even defeat would still leave only four points between the sides but make it unlikely we’ll get into the mix again! A draw is the least we can afford at Bury but know we’ve got to win really.
