Southend secured successive victories on Tuesday when Conor Clifford came off the substitutes bench to score a ripping drive to beat Cheltenham Town one-nil at Whaddon Road.

Daniel Bentley was forced into an early save when he turned away an effort from Jordan Wynter.

Incredibly, and very much to their credit, up until Tuesday Cheltenham had a wonderful disciplinary record having not had a player sent off for almost two years but Jason Taylor was shown a straight red card before half time for a reaction to a challenge by Conor Clifford, who hadn’t long been on the pitch.

Having turned to Clifford the rewards for Phil Brown in making him the one to come on didn’t take long in coming as, and not for the first time this season, the midfielder tried his luck from distance to beat Trevor Carson from distance seven minutes into the second half.

Myles Weston was guilty of a poor miss, having forced Carson into a fine save with the follow up leaving him with the goal at his mercy he shot wide.

A second wasn’t needed but it would have come had Kevan Hurst not seen his effort crash against the bar.
