Southend again left it late but another clean sheet was followed by another win with us beating promotion rivals Bury on Tuesday. This one nil win at the JD Stadium saw us move about Bury into fourth and behind third placed Wycombe Wanderers, with two games left, on goal difference alone.

Bury, offered great support from their largest crowd in pushing on for two decades having given free entry to this rearranged League 2 game after the original one was called off after only six minutes, threatened through Andrew Tutte and Nathan Cameron before the League 2 Player of the Year Danny Mayor was also denied.

The pressure continued from Bury, who knew they’d leave automatic promotion in their own hands with a win, but we then found our way into the game with Gary Deegan forcing a save from goalkeeper Nick Pope.

Daniel Bentley was called into a routine save from Danny Rose minutes before our breakthrough came with a foul on Jack Payne, committed by Kelvin Etuhu, gave us a freekick. David Worrall took this and against his former side curled home a brilliant goal to put us ahead.

Cameron and Craig Jones could’ve equalised for Bury before Bentley pulled off a brilliant late save from Ryan Lowe to make sure we won and moved level on points with Wycombe with it all to play for in the final two.

Two Southend wins might not be enough but we’ll be aiming for that and hoping that if we achieve this it’ll mean that we’re not going to need the play offs this season, which caused us heartbreak last time round.
