Southend quite literally paid the penalty with a penalty miss costing us defeat at Burton Albion on Wednesday as the ten men came back to beat us two one with a last minute winner. This defeat will end any, unlikely, hopes that we could win League 2 but also gives our automatic promotion hopes a dent.

When John Mousinho was penalised for holding we had a penalty chance to take the lead. Barry Corr has often been “spot on” this season but John McLaughlin saved this onto the post and then it went wide to safety.

The lead still came our way though in first half injury time when Corr got onto the end of Joe Pigott ball into the box to gives us the lead. Burton then went down to ten men when Robbie Weir was sent off for an elbow on our striker.

Burton’s ten men had a good go in the second half and they caught us with a counter attack that ended with Matty Palmer scoring to make it one one early in the second half.

Having missed a penalty and played a full half against ten men we would’ve been a little disappointed not to get all three points but would’ve definitely preferred one to none! And it became none in the last minute when substitute Nasser El Khayati grabbed a last minute winner!

Phil Brown’s said that our automatic promotion hopes have now ended, I’m not as certain that this is the case but these chances have certainly become less likely following this defeat.
