Gillingham chairman Paul Scally has revealed that Southend had offered a contract to Charlie Lee, but an arrival at Roots Hall hasn’t gone through as he’s rejected a Gills exit.

Lee was made available for transfer earlier this summer by last seasons League Two champions with the club actually offering him a settlement package, which he rejected.

Scally told BBC Radio Kent: ‘Charlie has an opportunity to go to Southend. There is no bid. They have offered him a wage.

‘I have offered Charlie a settlement package which he turned down and which he has a right to do. We can’t go any further, they can’t go any further.

‘It looks like Charlie is staying. If he stays, that’s fine. I haven’t got a problem with that at all.’

Any move to Southend would be dependant on him becoming a free agent, and unless the 26-year-old does agree to an exit from Gillingham he’ll be seeing out the final year of his contract at Priestfield.
