Phil Brown, as ever, is busy looking at various options (from various levels) as he looks to add to the Southend squad this summer.

The boss is looking to add players that can help us build on our consolidation of staying in League 1 last season by pushing on for a top 10 (at least) finish next season, which will ideally end in us finishing in a play-off place in actual fact….

Lee Novak was one of those Brown wanted but the former Birmingham striker, who enjoyed a successful loan with Chesterfield last season, has joined League 1 rivals Charlton instead.

27-year-old Novak had held more than one lot of talks with Brown and Southend chairman Ron Martin but a switch to the Valley was his preferred moved.

Some you win, some you lose.

The Echo is reporting that Brown is ‘one the verge’ of signing two players all being well though with talks with an unnamed full back and a winger having taken place with these talks ‘progressing well’ with deals expected ‘in the near future.’

It has been said the players both played in League 1 last season with the full back a regular whereas the wingers is a free agent.

The report added talks had also taken place with a ‘keeper and a striker too?

That striker most likely being Novak, who as we know, has opted for a different destination than Roots Hall.
