The time that Southend are spending in Portugal this week isn’t just about training it’s also been about playing with a one-nil win over Danish side Aalborg BK secured in a 60 minutes friendly.

Playing the Danish side, who are second in the Superliga, was something that Phil Brown managed to arrange with them due to both sides being in Portugal at the same time with him telling the official website how beneficial he feels this was as it gave the likes of Bedsente Gomis and Paul Smith a good hour of football.

The game, which was one that Brown thinks we more than matched them in, was won by a Barry Corr penalty.

‘It was an excellent exercise and a really good work out for the players all in all.

‘We won the game thanks to Barry’s penalty and that’s always a positive when you’re winning matches.

‘Four or five players played the whole game and the rest had a little bit of rotation which was good.

‘Aalborg are doing very well in their division in Denmark and were a very technical side but we more than matched them throughout and Barry’s penalty made the difference.’

Any win is welcomed and this, even though it was only a 60 minutes game, is a morale boosting one against a good European side.
