Southend 1-1 Fleetwood

Southend can just about forget about the play offs now; a home draw against Fleetwood did little to help their fading hopes. It didn’t really help the visitors that much either.

Fleetwood were quick out the tracks, and the victory that they needed, soon looked on when Alan Goodall (2) headed home with the game barely underway.

A chance came for Fleetwood to double their lead just before the break when a penalty was awarded against Ryan Cresswell for handball. Gareth Evans stepped up but saw his spot kick saved by Paul Smith to keep Southend in the game.

The one, and only, real effort on target that Southend had came late on and Barry Corr (86) made it count.

Substitute Corr made Fleetwood “pay the penalty” with his header earning the hosts a point in the 1-1 draw, which virtually ends The Shrimpers’ slim play off hopes and puts a dent in Fleetwood’s own aspirations of another promotion.
