For once I’m not talking about Daniel Bentley who I have often waxed lyrical about, but I am on about a Southend goalkeeper when I say we’re in safe hands. Ted Smith has the potential to be just as good as Bentley.

Smith’s potential has already been recognised by England and the teenager has been called up again.

An England debut at U18 level was secured last October, in a game that England won four-nil against Hungary, and he’s got another chance to represent England again after being called up for the friendly at St George’s Park against Belgium on February 18th.

Bentley is a goalkeeper that I hope we can keep for many years to come yet but when the time comes for him to leave Roots Hall, which he will if we can’t climb the divisions with him, then we’ll have Smith to come through.
