OK, there are pre-match preparations, then there ARE pre-match preparations!

In order to get Southend ‘up’ for the FA Cup first round tie at Barnet Steve Tilson gave the team an unusual run out at a ‘team building’ day in Upminster.

The events including a gun race where team mates had to pull a large field gun.

Barrett explained: ‘It was a great team building exercise but it was pretty weird. We had to do the canon run like the Royal Navy use to do. As always the olds beat the under 24’s but the pups didn’t take it very well and ended up sulking.’

He also appears to be no stranger to weird preparations:

‘The gaffer at Mansfield use to take us to the pub on a Friday prior to FA Cup matches. We’d be bought chips, sandwiches and pints of beer – it obviously worked as we had a decent run.’

On the game Barrett says ‘Underhill is a difficult place to go to, we are the side to be shot at and Barnet will not only want to take out scalp but the money will mean a lot as well.’
