The Shrimpers claimed top spot on Friday after a superb display in a rare Friday night match at Roots Hall.

Wayne Gray started the chances with a shot which Chelsea keeper Rhys Evans was equal to.

Luke Gutteridge who was a lucky to be playing after his later fitness test from flu opened the scoring with a simple cross from Wayne Bentley which gave Gutteridge the simple task of heading home.

The crowd of 7945 didn’t even have time to sit down again, when Gutteridge turned from goalscorer to goal provider with a pass to Gower who side footed the ball from 12 yards into the back of the net.

This game the Shrimpers a comfortable 2-0 lead at half time.

After the break, the Shrimpers started off the strongest with Che Wilson going close, and Wilson couldn’t believe his luck with a close range volley sailing over the crossbar. A well taken free kick from Maher met Gray unmarked in the box, but could only head the ball over the bar.

Swindon came close when Gutteridge misplaced a pass. Jamie Cureton gathered the ball but missed a one-on-one with Flahavan. The Shrimpers caused the crowd to sit tight with some last minute defending in their area, but Swindon’s chances were few a far between.

The Shrimpers sit comfortably at the top of League One at present, but with Colchester having two games in hand in second place, Southend need to keep the results coming in.
