Dan Bentley made a mistake, which cost Southend all three-points against Shrewsbury, at the weekend but how quickly some forget what incredible form he’s shown for Southend – and not just this season….

Such is the life of a ‘keeper though that when they make a mistake it’s usually always a very costly one, which proved to be the case when his error allowed Shrewsbury to deny us another win and him yet another cleansheet in our one-one draw at Greenhous Meadow.

Disappointingly though, more so than the dropped points, Bentley has been subjected to abuse by some Southend fans according to what Phil Brown told the Echo – how quickly some turn!

This was something that Brown said he was disappointed by but has also told Bentley that he needs to become ‘thick skinned’ and the best way to bite back at those trolling his account is by keeping another cleansheet tonight and helping us to victory over Cheltenham.

‘The best way to silence your critics is to prove them wrong which in Dan’s case means keeping a clean sheet against Cheltenham.

‘I have to say I was really disappointed to find out he had been getting stick from our fans on Twitter and it really did affect him on the coach on the way home.

‘He’s a young man at the start of his career and he will learn that you need to be thick skinned.’

When you engage on social media you do leave yourself open to this kind of thing, Brown went onto say that people can ‘hide behind their profile’ but if Bentley shut down his Twitter account he wouldn’t have to deal with this but would sooner any ‘unhappy supporters directed their abuse’ at him and not his players….

Bentley shouldn’t have to close his account, but does have to be prepared for such attacks at times, it’s a shame that some disgruntled fans were so quick to jump on a very rare Bentley mistake though.

A noble gesture from Brown to protect our ‘keeper but he too shouldn’t have to take abuse on behalf of the players should he?
