The Shrimpers run of five successive home victories was ended by Barnsley who claimed a hard earned draw at Roots hall.

Shaun Goater scored the games opener from the penalty spot – having earned the penalty after being brought down by Bobby Hassell – to give Southend the lead. the deadlock shortly before the hour mark from the penalty spot to hand Southend a precious advantage.

But striker Marc Richards drew Barnsley level with a header.

Tilson said: ‘We were a little bit too cavalier in those final 20 minutes and left ourselves exposed. But I still thought we were full value for our point although I admit our overall performance could have been better. We also created opportunities which we should have put away but at the end of the day I’m happy with a draw.’
