Southend saw their Essex rivals Colchester United beat them in a reserves game this afternoon at Roots Hall. A few of the first team players joined in with the new arrivals Jimmy Aggrey and Hecton Mackie.

Colchester opened the scoring after 33 minutes when Jamie Guy shot from 25 yards out which sailed into the top corner.

The Shrimpers came close when James Lawson was clear from defenders, but was denied by goalkeeper Mark Cousins rushing from his line.

Southend came out in the second half needing an equaliser to even the game out a little, and got what they needed when Jay Smith unleashed a shot from a deflected Mark Wright cross.

In a last effort from Colchester, Jamie Guy got on the scoresheet again when a shot from outside the area somehow crept into the back of the net.
