Southend went into the game with Exeter on Saturday with belief that we could come away with the three points.

That duly happened as we came back from St James Park with a 2-0 win.

Speaking of the win Phil Brown said: ‘I am an honest manager and I have got an honest bunch of players.

‘They have responded to any kind of criticism with some fabulous performances of late. We have got three wins and three clean sheets on the bounce.

‘We have fallen upon a system that suits everyone at the club. Barry Corr couldn’t make the starting line-up and Cauley got himself a goal. Both goals were from great crosses.

‘Players are playing with confidence and it is making sure we keep hold of that confidence because it can be fragile in any division.’

Our win made it five from our last seven in league two, with us weathering quite a second half storm from the Grecians.

Brown knows all too well, and is totally right, if we can keep playing like we did against a very good Exeter side there aren’t many sides that will fancy playing against us.

He added: ‘If the players keep performing like they are doing then people will find it difficult against us. We performed with that bit of quality in the first half that got us the 2-0 scoreline but second half they did throw the kitchen sink at us but we stood up to it manfully.’

Goals from Cauley Woodrow and Kevan Hurst, both in the first half, were enough to secure us the points and leave us nicely in the play off positions with us continuing an upturn in form.
