With speculation suggesting that we had signed Nottingham Forest winger Stephen McLaughlin on a loan spell ahead of the closure of the loan window yesterday, Southend have today confirmed his arrival until the end of the season.

The 24 year old moved to Forest in January 2013 after impressing for Derry City. Earlier this season he has been on loan with Notts County in League One, playing 16 times, where he played alongside Jake Cassidy and in his time with them he picked up seven assists.

He’s been handed the No 25 shirt for his stay with us and is in line to make his debut this weekend when we face Bury.

Manager Phil Brown told the Echo News that he had been delighted to finally get his man.

‘I must have had my eye on Stephen for about six months now so I`m very pleased to have finally signed him. I first saw him in a behind closed doors game between Colchester United and Nottingham Forest and was impressed by his work-rate. He was in the face of the opposition and I`ve kept tabs on him ever since. He has a great left foot which will give us good balance on that side and we will be picking him up on the way to Bury so he will be going straight in to the squad for what is obviously a big game.’

Brown also joked that now that we have five or six Irish lads, along with first team coach Graham Coughlan, he’s planning on a few England v Ireland games in training to liven things up in the future.
