Colchester United were on top for the first half and came back strongly towards the end of the game, but unlike the Roots hall encounter there was to be no last gasp goal.

In a nervy affair for Southend it is fair to say that their Essex cousins had the better of the chances and must have thought that when Referee Kevin Wright somehow found SIX minutes of injury time to add on that they would this time be on the wrong end of a very late derby day goal.

The stats will go on to show how Colchester carved out the most chances and saw the most of the ball, however it was not to be and the Shrimpers held on to claim a vital 3 points and the bragging rights for this season.

The victory takes Southend back up into 13th place and now only 2 points behind the U’s – Why oh why couldn`t they have got a win against Crewe in midweek!
