Mansfield and Exeter are done now, we can’t go back an undo those Southend defeats but what we can do is learn something from them to put things right against Hartlepool on Tuesday night.

Defensively we’re been keeping it tight and Phil Brown’s interview with the official website highlighted his mentality is to do that, conceding five goals in these last two games that ended in defeat wasn’t good enough.

Winning one-nil isn’t always pretty but if it brings the points Brown would be happy with that. I think within reason so would I.

A solid foundation is what we’ve built our success on this season so finding this again is what’s been worked on in training today, it obviously couldn’t have been worked on in Portugal but then again Exeter scored some wonderful goals but we didn’t play well.

Going ‘back to basics’ is the approach for Southend ahead of the meeting with Brown’s former side.

He had them scouted in their three-nil weekend win but that’s a result that he’s been told flattered them but that has brought them to within six points of us, not that we’re looking down as we’ve still got to look up but we could well have to if we can’t get a positive result against them.

It’s a game we’ll be without Luke Prosser again for, who has been the lynchpin in our defence.
