Much of the pre-match talk surrounded Hunt following his arrival at Southend, he made his Shrimpers debut but the friendlies ended with a defeat against Leyton Orient on Sunday.

One goal was enough, from one of Orient’s own summer signings, to see them through to a one-nil win at Roots Hall on Sunday.

Brown named Hunt on the bench, with him getting on in the second half, with Bentley returning in goal but he was beaten by former West Ham striker McCallum, who was sent off against the Shrimpers during loan with Portsmouth last season if memory serves, who scored from 30-yards on 24-minutes.

The O’s had already scored, with McCallum having the ball in the back of the net, but this was disallowed with an offside flag up. He scored four-minutes later though!

Bolger was denied a Southend equaliser by the outside of the post in the first half as was Prosser with a header in the second as the Blues tried, without success, to draw level.

Southend XI: Bentley; White, Bolger, Barrett, Coker (Prosser – 75); Atkinson (Leonard – 75), Deegan (Wordsworth – 75), Payne (Worrall 70), Hurst (Timlin – 60); Weston (Hunt – 45); Mooney.
Unused Subs: T. Smith.

Hunt, following his first football since February, admitted he was ‘a bit rusty’ but enjoyed his first outing for the Shrimpers.

Ideally a win would have been wanted but he told the Official Website it’s all about the League 1 season getting underway.

‘I was a bit rusty but I enjoyed it massively. It was my first game since February. I thought we had a lot of chances – one or two off the line and although we didn’t win, it’s all about next week.’

On his move to Roots Hall Hunt said it gave him a chance to ‘settle for now’ having spent five-years in Scotland, five-years in Reading and then time at Leeds and Ipswich, with his wife’s family nearby Southend was ideal.

The chance to work with Brown was also particularly pleasing, he added.

‘I spoke to the gaffer two or three weeks ago. There was a lot of things off the field that I had to deal with but I spoke to a few people and they sung his praises. I spoke to my brother who I think said he was one of the best he’s ever worked with.

‘Personally my wife’s family are only 60 miles down the road which makes the move close to home.’
