Several Southend players are out of contract at the end of the season so to ensure that they don’t walk away for nothing Phil Brown has revealed that he wants talks to take place early.

Kevan Hurst, Ryan Leonard, Freddy Eastwood, Mark Phillips and Anthony Straker, all key players, are among those out of contract this summer and due to them being such key personnel he wants talks taking place now really to get them tied down.

We’ve got previous of losing players, and they were of such importance to us, on frees and he doesn’t want this again like it did with the likes of Sean Clohessy and Gavin Tomlin last summer.

Offering new contracts, or at least talking about a new deal doesn’t guarantee that they’ll sign these but it’ll be better to start these talks sooner rather than later. If players make it clear that they don’t want to stay beyond them summer then it might better for us that we looked at maybe offloading them in the summer for something rather than nothing?

It’ll be interesting to see what the New Year bring with these thoughts.
