It was feared that it could happen, or would happen, but it was definitely hoped that it wouldn’t.

Actually I think saying “feared” does an injustice to our opponents, as if losing to them was a terrible thing! Which, of course, it wasn’t but it wasn’t a good thing either. What was feared was complacency could perhaps set in and the “wounded animal” in our opponents could have fourth back….

Having won six of the last seven games Southend went into the meeting with Torquay full of confidence but it was the relegation threatened Devon based side that picked up the points with a 1-0 win at Plainmoor.

John Marquis, on loan from Millwall, scored the only goal of the game shortly after the half time break.

The performance from Southend just wasn’t good enough, and was a far cry from what we’d seen in recent weeks as we soared up the table into the automatic promotion place, and Phil Brown didn’t hold back in his disappointment.

Brown said: ‘It was an unrecognisable team performance. To a man you couldn’t say anyone played well individually, so collectively you are not going to.

‘We didn’t play any football. We tended to go route one, maybe because of the conditions. It is all about bottle and pressure and we didn’t handle the opposition or the conditions and consequently we got what we deserved – absolutely nothing.

‘It was frustrating for a number of reasons. Performances over October and November have been outstanding but today we didn’t play.’

We’ve got an ambitious manager, lets not forget that he’s spent most of his time managing in the top flight, or at least championship, and he has now called upon the players to make sure that they match this ambition over the final 26 games of the season and “step up” to make amends for Saturday.

You never want to lose but perhaps this defeat will work in our favour in the long run to remind us that we’re not invincible and anything is possible in this league….
