A behind closed doors friendly against Canvey Island finished with Ellis Brown and Barry Corr braces in a seven nil victory.

A strong side got a good run out in the match, and the side did feature the likes of Cian Bolger, Adam Barrett, Gary Deegan and Luke Prosser who all got good run outs and hopefully some good confidence as well.

On loan Shaq Coulthirst opened the scoring inside of the first five minutes, and less than ten minutes after that Ellis Brown had doubled our advantage. Coulthirst missed from the penalty spot on the half hour mark, but with the break approaching Corr grabbed our third as he connected with a Kevan Hurst cross. Minutes after that Brown added his second and our fourth.

Five minutes after the break Hurst curled in a free kick of his own and Corr grabbed his second from the spot later on. On 70 minutes Luke Prosser completed the scoring for us, making it seven nil.

Southend:

P. Smith (Bexon 81), Bolger (Jordan Williams 81), Trialist (Cotton 46), Deegan, Barrett, Prosser (Matsuzaka 81), Hurst (Scott 81), Coulthirst (Adeyeye 81), Brown (Jason Williams 68), Corr, Weston (Farrell, 68).

A good run out for a number of players the member of the trialist family will have to be watched.

First team coach Graham Coughlan was quoted by the Echo News following the game and he said.

“I thought the players were very professional before, during and after the game. The senior boys really set an example and a standard to the younger ones and I felt as though we earned the right to play. It was a really good work out, and you can only keep training for so long. You need to get a game under your belts and some of these lads haven’t had that opportunity for a little while.”

Coughlan added that in his opinion some of them staked their claim to impress the gaffer well, and he’s confident it will have done them the ‘power of good’.
