The win over Leyton Orient on Tuesday not only meant that Southend made the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Final it also meant they’ll “break even” financially this year.

Ron Martin, as he told BBC Essex, said: ‘The cup run will wipe out the budget deficit for the year.

‘We forecast a cash requirement of £770,000 but we’ll get that all back. We’ll probably break even this year.’

Southend’s Wembley appearance, their first final even though they Clapham Orient in a league game in 1930, is worth somewhere around £350,000 to the club!

Martin has played down any financial difficulties with The Shrimpers and insists that once the club finally moves to its new Fossetts Farm home the “income will be significantly greater”.
