Southend could soon have another international goalkeeper in our squad as the Echo reports that Daniel Bentley is being considered for an England U21 call up.

Bentley didn’t have too much to do on Saturday in the one-one draw at Carlisle United but he did make one very good save from Jack Marriott and also denied the striker in a one on one duel.

Gareth Southgate sent scouts to watch him and he could be called up for the first time to be in the squad for the European Championship qualifiers against Lithuania and Moldova in September.

The drawback to a call up would be that other clubs would increase their interest in him but more pressingly he would miss out League 2 meeting with Oxford United at Roots Hall a week Saturday.

Bentley’s good enough for England though so I hope he gets this call up, as he deserves it.

Ted Smith is already involved with the England U19 side so we’re literally in save hands with our goalkeepers, not forgetting that the experienced Paul Smith isn’t a bad goalkeeper either is he.
