Cian Bolger’s arrival from Bolton Wanderers is something that Phil Brown is really overjoyed about. In his interview with the official website he’s been unable to mask what a signing he feels that the defender is.

Brown was happy when he arrived last season on loan but just a game into that spell he was injured and had to return to his Championship parent club but having heard that the defender could be available again he had no hesitation in making his move.

With a loan first expected the signing of Bolger for an undisclosed fee is even better with Brown thinking that it really sends out a statement of intent for this season that we’ve brought in such a good defender and leaves us really well stocked in defence.

‘I can’t emphasise enough how much this transfer means to me as manager of this football club if I’m honest.

‘Cian only became available on the market two weeks ago and that was for loan, so to be able to agree a permanent deal for an undisclosed fee is fantastic news.

‘To be able to bring a player of his quality through the door is a real statement of intent – and he’ll provide fantastic competition for places now.’

With Luke Prosser and Adam Thompson, who Brown says ‘haven’t put a foot wrong in pre season’, joined by Mads Ibenfeldt and Bolger we’ve got four excellent central defenders that should be able to continue our tight defence from last season.

The type of selection headache that Brown now has for the opening game of the season is one that he wants to have and is delighted by this, even if it makes his job a little harder.

It’s better to have too many than too few though isn’t it!
