Midfielder Gary Deegan has signed a three month deal at Southend United after impressing manager Phil Brown during a trial spell.

The 26 year old has been training with the lads for the last couple of weeks, and Brown has been sufficiently impressed to give him the chance to stay and have some stability for the next few months, in the hopes of seeing him impress further.

The Irishman began his career at Shelbourne, and then went on to have spells with Kilkenny City, Longford Town, Galway United and finally Bohemians before securing a move to the Football League with Coventry City.

In his first season with them he made 17 appearances across all competitions, scoring twice, but then injury laid him low for almost the entire 2010-11 season after he picked up a serious injury.

When back fit the following year he went on to make 25 appearances for them, scoring three goals in the Championship.

He then moved to Scotland for a spell with Hibernian in 2012-13, making a further 23 appearances with a return of one goal, and returned to England again last season where he made 30 appearances for Northampton Town.

He has been handed the No 22 shirt and has joined in time to be in contention to make his debut for us in the game against Carlisle United.
