Former Chelsea youngster Conor Clifford has turned down the chance to join Bristol Rovers on loan, a move that had been strongly rumoured over the weekend.

Clifford was one of those that Phil Brown transfer-listed recently and Darrell Clarke had hoped to take the midfielder to the Memorial Stadium to give him the first-team football that he needs, which we can’t at this stage.

A move, according to what Clarke told the Bristol Post, was close to going through but it was decided in the end that he wants to stay at Roots Hall – or at least wants to stay in the Football League with a move into non-league not something that appeals….

Clarke said: ‘We were close to doing a deal, but the lad wants to stay at Southend and try and get into the team or alternatively find something else at League Two level.

‘It is a bit frustrating, but we move on and will be trying to bring in a creative midfielder to give us an extra spark.

‘We have calls and enquiries in for alternative targets and we are waiting for responses and we’re hoping to do something today.’

It would seem unlikely that Clifford will now make an exit today, the loan window reopens next week so we might have to wait until then?
