Conor Clifford had apparently ‘opted to stay’ with Southend, rejecting one loan exit, but late on deadline day the former Chelsea man made the move to Barnet on a short-term loan – Jason Williams also went out on loan again.

The official website confirmed the Clifford deal with Phil Brown saying that is was a good move that gave him the chance to ‘restart’ his career.

‘He’s gone to a big club in the Conference in a bid to restart his career. They’re favourites to get back in the Football League. It’s a chance for him to go out on loan and play a few games, which is what Conor wants.

‘Barnet are doing very well in the Conference, so it’s a really good opportunity for Conor.’

Clifford, who was transfer-listed in January, needs to play football – he may well have wanted this to be in the Football League but much as Brown says this is a good move for all concerned, he’ll be with them for around a month initially.

As for Williams, this was another loan deal confirmed on the official website this week with Brown deciding that loan with Welling United was the best move at this stage for his development.

His previous loan spell away from Roots Hall had seen him score six-goals in six-games, which saw him recalled but he’ll now end the season with them on a youth loan.

‘He got himself six goals in six games in a division below. He’ll find it more of an experience than he did at Chelmsford.

‘Welling are in a fight towards the bottom of the Conference and he’ll learn a lot playing for them. We wish him all the best, and hopefully when he comes back to us, he will be stronger and better off for it, ahead of next season.’

Another sensible move for me.
