Southend couldn’t have chosen a worse moment to falter, matching Bury and Wycombe on Saturday would have seen us secure our place in League 1 with automatic promotion secured.

Both won, Wycombe in dramatic fashion but that wasn’t enough, we couldn’t do this ourselves as we suffered a three-one loss at Morecambe and that opened the door to Bury who happily took this to secure third place….

Phil Brown, quoted in the Echo, knows that the squad is hurting at the moment after we threw away a golden chance to secure automatic promotion but he also knows we’ve got to go again and has called up all to use that disappointment as inspiration to go up via the play-offs this season.

‘We’ve got a group of players who are hurting but they’ve now got to turn that pain into joy and they are the only ones who can do it.

‘We got ourselves into a great position and we’ve thrown it away but we have to dust ourselves down again and get ready for the twists and turns of the play-offs.’

Many would have been involved in the play-offs last season so they can draw on that too for added incentive to go one better this time.

Southend went to the Globe Arena backed by well over 2,000 fans, which all added to the atmosphere but it wasn’t to be, nor was an incredible end of season run to give us a points return of 84 that would have, amazingly, been enough in all but one of the past 20 seasons to gain us automatic promotion!

Despite Saturday’s setback Brown maintains that we go into the play-offs with momentum with us.

‘With seven wins, two draws and one defeat in nine games you have to say we’re still going into the play-offs with momentum.

‘Getting 84 points is also a magnificent return but of course it’s a massive disappointment to miss out on the top three.

‘The expectation level was automatic promotion and a carnival atmosphere but unfortunately it didn’t turn out that way.’

First up we go to Stevenage on Sunday, with an unusual and hardly ideal kick-off time of 6:35pm with the second leg at Roots Hall next Thursday, with a more traditional 7:45pm kick-off slot.
