Ryan Auger was one of those invited back to train with us during pre season even though his contract has now expired and he’s a free agent. The defender took up Phil Brown’s offer and played at left back for 45 minutes of the five-nil win over Great Wakering Rovers, and did a good job.

Brown already knew of his qualities but is still unsure on his limitations but in his interview with the Echo he revealed that he feels the message is starting to sink in and will keep working with him, but isn’t sure what his future will be yet.

‘Ryan’s quality on the ball is there for all to see but his weakness is when the opposition have possession.

‘We’ve been working on him with that and the penny is starting to drop.

‘We will keep working with him, see how he gets on in the next couple of games and then make a decision on him.’

As Ryan’s one of our own that’s come through the youth system with the club we’d love him to have a future a Roots Hall but this has to be a decision based on ability and not a sentimental one but at the moment he does seem like he’s got a chance of getting another contract if that penny keeps dropping.

Luke Chambers looks destined to move to pastures new though, the goalkeeper was also invited back for pre season but is expected to trial with both Championship side Millwall and our League 2 rivals Cambridge United.
